US-led coalition strikes kill over 80 Syrian troops, IS advances

At least 100 troops are wounded. The Russian defense ministry said U.S.-led coalition aircraft, two F-16 and two A-10 warplanes, entered Syrian airspace from Iraq and struck the air base four times, and stopped when Russia intervened. The self-styled Islamic State terrorist organisation claimed its fighters took control of an artillery base between Jabal Thardeh (Mount Thardeh) and the Deir Ezzor airbase. According to reports, IS fighters advanced after the US-led coalition strikes on the Syrian army base, but have been pushed back after Syrian troops regrouped. Russian planes reportedly killed twenty terrorists while aiding Syrian troops who fought back an advance by fighters in the area, as the Syrian army sent dozens of troops to the area, aiming to stop the advance of IS militants. Russian Foreign Ministry’s official spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in an interview: If we had suspicions earlier that this is in defense of Jebhat al-Nusra (terrorist organization banned in Russia), then now, after today’s airstrikes at the Syrian army, we come to a scary conclusion — the White House defends IS.” In December 2015, international coalition aircraft struck a field camp of the 168th Brigade of the 7th Division of the Syrian Army, which is just two kilometers west of the city of Deir Ezzor. The raid resulted in the deaths of four Syrian soldiers and wounded 12 others, in addition to the destruction of three combat vehicles. The United States said in August 2015 that it’s aircraft would target any party who threatened it’s trained fighters – including the Syrian army. Russia tonight called for an emergency session of the United Nations Security council, which was granted, and demanded an explanation from the US over the airstrikes.
